A Teaching Clinic with a Community Mission
DeTar Family Medicine Center is home to the DeTar Family Medicine Residency Program, a three-year, ACGME-accredited program led by Dr. Julia Shae Krause-Castaneda. The program currently supports 25 resident physicians under the guidance of nine dedicated faculty members.
Residents receive hands-on training across a wide spectrum of family medicine, including inpatient care, obstetrics, behavioral health integration, telemedicine, chronic disease management, community health clinics and even international medicine.
Situated within a community-focused hospital system, the residency program emphasizes prevention, leadership and relationship-based care. Residents don’t just train here — they build meaningful connections with patients and families while helping strengthen the health of South Texas.
Through a team-based model, every patient benefits from attentive care delivered by resident physicians working alongside experienced, board-certified faculty. This collaborative approach helps to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care while preparing the next generation of family medicine physicians to serve our communities with heart.
